Thanks to a grant from the Friends of the NIU Libraries’ Awards Program, Founders Memorial Library, in partnership with the Digital Convergence Lab (FO 340) is piloting Interactive Window Displays, the first on NIU’s campus.
To install the Interactive Window Display, the Digital Convergence Lab applied a rear projection film product by Proscreens to the back of the window glass. The film is designed specifically to display projected images and video. Projectors were mounted inside the windows and connected to a computer where the multimedia and interactive applications are controlled.
Interaction is provided through a new technology created by Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect interfacing with Unity 3D and a web application. With the Kinect camera, the user controls the display through the movement of his or her body.

Oculus Rift – The Digital Convergence Lab is looking for students for Fall 2014 to work on a 3D virtual application using Oculus Rift.
Text Mining – This team will identify and use text-mining software to analyze a very large body of text. Typically text-mining work is described as "distant reading," in which software is used to detects patterns in bodies of text much too large to be read by an individual. These patterns can provide new insight in thinking about what the texts mean, be it from the perspective of the historian, scholar of literature, or student of language itself.
Current projects include:
Online Collaborative Argumentation Tool – This spring a student team is designing an online collaborative tool to support collaborative argumentation in science for middle school students of different cultures.
In the Digital Convergence Lab people come together in the exploration of new media, experiential learning, community outreach, and multi-disciplinary research. The DCL brings new media technologies to the attention of the campus community, and provides support for research and development activities leading to the creation new digital media applications and tools.
